History
Mohtasham
“Mohtasham refers to Kashan rugs made from c.1880 until 1914 woven in a particular atelier with a specific quality wool. Hajji Mollah Hassan Mohtasham, was an importer of English yarn and textiles active in Kashan in the second half of a 19th century. He first began employing machine spun, Australian Merino wool in rugs woven by his wife.
The famous workshop of Mohtasham is one of the most remarkable periods in rug history.
He kick started a momentum of rug production in Kashan In mid-19th century. Mohtasham settled in Kashan to revive artistry in Persia. He began producing his works of art that would soon change the world of rugs forever more. His designs?-unmistakable.
The legendary workshop of Mohtasham was established in the 1840’s in the city of Kashan. Mohtasham was famous for using the highest quality silk and intricate designs. He was well known for his preciseness and high standards of weaving.
Soon after opening his workshop, Mohtasham quickly became the number one master weaver of Persia during that time. Only a limited quantity of Mohtasham rugs were produced- Many desired them, only some could attain them. His works were rare and hard to come across.
Many noblemen often gifted works of Mohtasham to the Shahs of Persia. The Shahs also gifted Mohtasham rugs to his most prestigious foreign guests. Mohtasham’s are highly treasured still today more than ever before.
