  • Chinese guardian lions or Imperial guardian lions, often miscalled "Foo Dogs" in the West, are a common representation of the lion in imperial China. Chinese guardian lions are sometimes referred to in English as shishi, from the Chinese shí shī (Chinese: 石獅; pinyin: shíshī; literally: "stone lion"), which refers specifically to lion sculptures in stone. The concept, which originated and became popular in Chinese Buddhism, subsequently spread to other parts of Asia including, Japan, Korea, Tibet, Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Cambodia and Laos.

  • Since the introduction of the lion symbolism from Indian culture especially through Buddhist symbolism, statues of guardian lions have traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces, Imperial tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy, from the Han dynasty (206 BC – AD 220), and were believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits.

History

The symbolism of Foo Dogs, also known as Chinese Guardian Lions or Imperial Guardian Lions, originated in  Ancient Chinese Buddhism and subsequently spread to other parts of Asia.  The Guardian Lion symbolism, used in various artistic contexts, was believed to have powerful, mythical protective benefits- depicting supremacy and nurture at the same time.

Chinese rugs are easily identified compared to traditional Persian rugs, due to the unique characteristics found in Chinese rugs.  The Chinese rug-making history is somewhat ambiguous, without a clear idea of who influenced the origins of rug making in the Far East. What is known is that traditional rug weaving was first found in China in the Northwest Territories as early as the 1500s and the designs were largely influenced by Buddhist and Taoist symbols.

The rich Chinese culture is depicted in their weaving, and unlike the traditional Persian rug, the symbols and colors all have specific meanings and intents.  In the late 1800's a monk from the Northwest Territories of China moved to Peking (Beijing) and set up rug weaving schools to help the poor earn an income.  The weaving style was much like what was being done in the Northwest, utilizing the same symbols and designs.  These factories were successful and started producing the first Peking rugs.
