History of Agra~
The city of Agra stands along the Yamuna River in Uttar
Pradesh, India. The creation of this ancient city dates back to 1000 BCE. Agra
also became the Capital of Delhi in the Early 1500’s CE.
Throughout the 16th Century, the city of Agra, well
known for the Taj Majal, experienced a period of flourish. This period of
success is attributed to the Muhgal Emperor Barbur who reigned from 1483-1530. This
golden period was greatly influenced by Persian culture as well. Barbur first
imported textiles from Persia to inspire his master weavers. He built gardens
that were reminiscent of Persian fields and infused Agra with Persian culture. Persian architecture, art, literature, poetry, and weaving played a major role in Agra’s
establishment.
The city thrived with the production of paintings,
stonework, jewelry, architecture, textiles, and carpet weaving. Barbur created
an entirely intellectual capital that would reign over India forever. Since
then, Agra became one of the most renowned cities of carpet production as well.
In the 19th century, there was another period of revival where
carpets were often created for high bidding commissioners, royalty, and
noblemen.
